Latest KIDS COUNT Data Book Finds More Minnesota Children Living in Poverty or Without Health Care Coverage (May 06, 2007)
The number of Minnesota children without health insurance has climbed to 79,000, and the number of kids living in extreme poverty has increased by 63 percent since 2000, according the annual KIDS COUNT Data Book released today by Children's Defense Fund (CDF) Minnesota.

Children's Defense Fund Minnesota will honor four local teens who have overcome extreme adversity, including the violent death of parents and family members, poverty, family violence, chronic homelessness, and chemical addictions to succeed in school, society and life. The four will each be recognized with a $4,000 college scholarship at CDF's annual "Beat the Odds" awards dinner Wednesday, February 15 at 7 p.m. at the Minneapolis Hilton.

More than 53,000 Low-Income Minnesota Families Paid Average of 236 Percent Annual Interest Rate for "Fast-Cash" Tax Refund Loans in 2004 (Feb. 06, 2006)
More than 53,000 low- to moderate-income Minnesota households who received the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) paid commercial tax preparers an average of 236 Annual Percentage Rate (APR) to get their tax refunds more quickly in 2004, according to a new report released Monday by the Children's Defense Fund Minnesota.
